Thoughts & Prayers with Franklin Regional

All of us at ESSMC send our thoughts and prayers out to the members of the Franklin Regional School District who were affected by the events that occurred in April.  We hope everyone will continue to support our friends, family members, and patients in the FR community.

ESSMC & Plum School District Receive National Award

Our athletic training staff at Plum High School was recently awarded the Safe Sports School Award by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).  Plum is one of only three schools in PA to receive this award.  The award is earned by demonstrating exemplary dedication to the highest standards of student athlete safety by following stringent guidelines established by the NATA.

Avoid the Long Wait to See a Doctor:

The infographic below shows the average number of days it takes a patient to see a physician.  The national average to see a family physician is 19.5 days and it takes 18.5 days to see a specialist like an orthopedic surgeon.

Did you recently injure your back, neck, shoulder, hip, knee, or ankle?

Do you have symptoms of vertigo?

Why wait over half a month to see your doctor when you can self refer yourself without a doctor’s prescription to Physical Therapy at East Suburban Sports Medicine Center.

In PA one can be seen by a Physical Therapist for 30 days before a doctor’s prescription is required, and we have same day appointments to help expedite your journey to a pain free lifestyle.

Our Physical Therapists are trained in medical screening and we will always promptly refer you to a specialist if your condition is not treatable with physical therapy.  Our staff has an excellent working relationship with family doctors, orthopedic surgeons, and neurosurgeons; which allows us the ability to facilitate a consult with a doctor in a timely fashion.

Meniscus Tear: Is Surgery Really Necessary?

A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that for patients aged 35-65 that not having surgery was just as effective as having surgery to clean out a degenerative knee meniscus tear. Due to continued research, there has been a paradigm shift in the treatment of degenerative meniscus tears.  The evidence now points in the direction of Physical Therapy over surgery.  In another recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers have found that there was no significant difference in knee function between patients receiving meniscus surgery and those that only attended Physical Therapy. You may be asking yourself “How can not fixing a tear yield a positive outcome?”  To quote a Norwegian Doctor; “degenerative tears should be looked upon as wrinkles with age. Although some may try, we all know that one cannot cut away age with surgery. The best anti-age medicine is physical activity.”

What do these studies tell us?  The conservative treatment of degenerative meniscus tears should always begin with Physical Therapy and only if that treatment fails, should one have surgery.

Do you have or know someone with a torn meniscus?  Visit us at and make an appointment at our nearest office.  Our Physical Therapists will create an individualized exercise program for you and within a month you will have a better functioning knee.
