The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill: New at ESSMC

East Suburban Sports Medicine Center (ESSMC) has Pittsburgh’s newest AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill® to make physical therapy, athletic training and rehabilitation less painful. This amazing technology gives you the opportunity to exercise, even while you are still recovering from surgery or injury, with less pain than traditional methods. There are only five of these units in Pittsburgh and we have two of them! Now in Murrysville and Penn Hills!

How the AlterG Works

Originally developed by NASA to make it easier for astronauts to exercise in space, AlterG’s unique space-age unweighting technology reduces the impact of walking or running to help you heal, thanks to its special inflatable chamber that allows you to walk or run at anywhere between 20 and 100 percent of your body weight.
This technology allows you to:

• Easily select your reduced body weight where movement becomes pain free
• Give yourself the opportunity for a smooth rehabilitation back to full recovery
• Lower the impact on your joints and muscles
• Exercise without the risk of falling
• Enjoy yourself- you’ll feel like you’re running on air!

ESSMC helped me get back to pounding the pavement quickly!

ESSMC helped me get back to pounding the pavement quickly! I was very eager post-surgery to start running again and this was only possible under the direction of the PTs and access to the Alter-G treadmill. I was “running” as of 4 weeks post-op and was able to safely increase speed and time spent running, reaching a full recovery within 12 weeks. The staff was always so accommodating and supportive! I would highly recommend any runner or athlete recovering from injury to check out the Alter-G. It’s a game changer in my recovery!
