Meet Carolyn McElhaney, OTR/L, CHT

Carolyn is an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist working in the Monroeville office. She has over 35 years of experience in hand therapy in the Pittsburgh area, having worked in both hospital and outpatient settings.

Carolyn holds a degree in occupational therapy from College Misericordia and has earned her hand therapy certification from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission. CHTs are certified or licensed therapists who, through advanced education, clinical experience, and independent study, have become proficient in the treatment of pathological upper limb conditions. They must pass a rigorous test and demonstrate continued professional development and competency. There are only 7,000 Certified Hand Therapists worldwide.

Carolyn works with patients with all types of hand and arm injuries and conditions to restore motion, strength, and function to get patients back to independence in their daily lives. She also makes custom splints for patients as needed.

Carolyn enjoys working with patients to help them improve their quality of life, whether that’s through regaining the ability to live independently, performing their work responsibilities, or participating in their favorite hobby or sport.

Carolyn is a member of ASHT and volunteers as a mentor for therapists wanting to become certified hand therapists. She also volunteers for Make A Wish as a wish granter.

When she is not working, Carolyn enjoys cooking, gardening, crafting, traveling, biking, and hiking.
